How To Be An Attractive Employer When Working From Home
We are looking at a future where anyone can work from anywhere. It’s a fantastic opportunity for businesses, but that doesn’t make the shift any less daunting for us…
It’s all too easy for remote workers to get frustrated and experience burnout as a result of feeling like they are always ‘at work.’ And, as we all well know, an unhappy employee makes for an unhappy business.
As an employer, it’s your job to keep them motivated and inspired, which is why we’ve put together our top tips on how to negotiate the pros and cons of working at home.
Don’t let technology become a barrier
Although you can no longer greet your colleague in the morning, lean over your friend’s desk or offer anyone a cup of tea, it’s vital that you continue to interact with your team in whatever way you can. And that means using your computer, not resenting what it’s replaced.
Technology is now your number one tool when it comes to communication. Set up a group chat. Schedule a Zoom call. Make time for a phone call.
You shouldn’t just be checking that your team is meeting objectives, either. Check in on them: Are they coping okay? Are they feeling overwhelmed? Is there anything you can do to help?
A simple question can provide them with a bit of much-needed interaction and make all the difference to their day, helping them to feel supported and trusted to get the job done.
Set out clear working hours
It can be hard not to micro-manage as an employer, especially when managing remotely. What if they overslept? What if they miss a deadline? What if they aren’t putting in the hours?
What you have to understand is that it is your staff member’s time and they are accountable for how they spend it. Setting clear objectives just makes it easier to know what needs to get done and when.
Having a clear schedule can help boost productivity levels and checking in at regular intervals of the day will keep everyone focused.
After weeks of staying at home, alone, staring at the same project for hours, it can be tough for team members to maintain a positive mental attitude and continue delivering great results.
That’s why it is so important that you ensure your staff know that they are not chained to their desk. Allowing them time away from their screens used to be at the normal at the office, so why not now?
As long as they are easily reachable over the phone and not just out for a leisurely lunch, it shouldn’t be an issue.
Plus, there’s no way of billing time anyway – inspiration is more likely to strike while out on a walk than when staring at blank, white walls.
Share the love
Making your staff feel acknowledged, looked after, and trusted will not only make you feel like a good person, it makes you look like a kind and attractive employer.
Encourage your team to share the love and post about this across their social media profiles, for this will attract better candidates going forward and help grow your business success!
The new working-from-home setup is likely to keep going long after the pandemic that initiated it, with many multinational companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon extending a permanent working-from-anywhere option for their employees.
As of right now, your key focus should be on support as well as the bottom line.
That’s why we want all of our clients and candidates to feel seen and heard – we might not be there in person, but we are always here for you.
